Musical Stylin'
I tend to dabble in a lot of crap: one of those dabblings is music recording. At this point in time, I'm under the label of either/or Records and I currently have 5 tunes for you to take a look at.
Don't Panic
The first recording I did was Don't Panic, a cover of the Coldplay song. This was my first foray into recording, so I basically chose it because it was easy to play (yay for laziness). If I recall correctly, the recording only has one effect, which is on the bass guitar.
Here's what I used:
- TAMA Rockstar Drumkit with Zildjian cymbals
- KORG PA60
- Epiphone LP Special II on a LANEY stack
- Ibanez bass guitar on a Peavey bass amp
- Tambourine
- Recorded on GarageBand for OS X on a MacBook Pro
This was recorded in my study with all the equipment I had lying around.
Chum's Groove
Chum's Groove was done immediately after I finished Don't Panic. It's essentially a test of how the acoustic guitar sounded (since I had it mic'ed up, rather than plugged into an amp). As such, it's pretty damn short, but I quite like the sound of it. The small electric guitar licks were done by my younger brother.
Here's what I used:
- Ashton D-25 acoustic guitar
- Tambourine
- Ibanez bass guitar on a Peavey bass amp
- Some sort of semi-acoustic guitar
- Recorded on GarageBand for OS X on a MacBook Pro
The Night's Grip
The Night's Grip was done a considerable time after the previous two. It was for a project for Uni (a sound project) and was only intended to act as a "base" for the rest of my project. Fortunately, it seems that people seemed to like it, so I'm planning to re-record it and extend it so it's musically viable.
This piece is an attempt (I must stress that word) at the downtempo genre (I had been listening to a lot of Zero 7 and Theivery Corporation).
Here's what I used:
- Asthon D-25 acoustic guitar
- TAMA Rockstar Drumkit with Zildjian cymbals
- Ibanez bass guitar on a Peavey
- Recorded on GarageBand for OS X on a MacBook Pro
The Night's Grip [Remix]
This remixed and remastered version of The Night's Grip was done for Uni. Using the (incredibly) raw data from the original recording, I completely redid all the effects in Pro Tools, rather than whack on some cheap GarageBand effects. I've also added a few ambient noises throughout the piece, the most noticable of which occurs at the beginning (for your information, the speech was from a boring as hell Mapping the Postmodern lecture that I recorded on my MP3 player). I prefer this version of the original, as I managed to hide the fact that this was recorded in a dodgy room a bit better thanks to Pro Tools freedom to do whatever you want.
Here's the breakdown:
- Recorded on GarageBand and mixed on Pro Tools
- Random ambient noises from mixed sources, recorded onto a Zen Vision:M
On the Mend
A shortened, instrumental cover of the Foo Fighters song, this was the first thing I did on Lexicon Omega unit I picked up. I'm pretty happy with the quality (it's far better than anything I produced in GarageBand) and it was a lot easier to do (I did pretty much no post-processing). I play everything except the electric guitar line, which is played by my brother.
Here's the breakdown:
- Cort Earth 100F Acoustic Guitar
- Fender Jazz Bass
- Greg Bennett RL-2/CH Semi-Acoustic
- Zoom GFX-5 Guitar Effects Pedal
- Egg shaker
- Recorded via the Lexicon Omega unit and mixed on Cubase LE
